REEFolution

This case study highlights the efforts of REEFolution, a non-profit dedicated to protecting and restoring coral reefs. By collaborating with local communities and scientists, they grow and outplant coral species, having placed over 3,600 artificial reef structures and restored more than 5,000 square meters of reef. Their Reefodivers initiative at Swahili Beach resort in Diani, Kenya, offers certified divers the opportunity to engage in coral reef conservation. The page also addresses the significant threats coral reefs face from natural and human-induced stressors, emphasizing the urgent need for conservation. My role was to capture and narrate these efforts through video content.

The Vision

REEFolution is committed to the protection and restoration of coral reefs, which are essential for maintaining the health of our oceans. Working with local communities and leading scientists, they aim to preserve these vibrant ecosystems for current and future generations. To support their mission, REEFolution grows and outplants coral species, helping to restore reef sites to a healthy state. They have successfully placed over 3,600 artificial reef structures and restored more than 5,000 square meters of reef. As part of their expansion, REEFolution launched Reefodivers at the Swahili Beach resort in Diani, Kenya. This initiative offers certified divers the chance to participate in coral reef conservation through a PADI distinctive specialty course called Coral Reef Restoration Diver, and join as volunteers in their mission.

The Challenge

Coral reefs face significant threats from both natural and human-induced stressors. Natural threats include coral depredation, diseases, and storms. However, human activities pose a far greater risk, including climate change, pollution, coastal development, the spread of invasive species, and unsustainable fishing and tourism practices. These actions have led to a dramatic decline in coral health worldwide. REEFolution works to highlight both the destructive impacts humans can have on coral reefs and the ways we can reverse this damage. By focusing on the global impacts of climate change and the local burdens of unsustainable fishing, they emphasize the urgency of their mission. My role was to capture these efforts and tell their story, showcasing that through dedicated conservation initiatives, it is possible to turn the tide and ensure these crucial ecosystems thrive once again.
